Normal corneal transparency is partly due to the regular and equally spaced arrangement of collagen fibrils and compact structure of keratocytes. Both these factors are disrupted in the process of collagen cross-linking (CXL) treatment. CXL interferes with corneal transparency by altering the normal structure of the cornea.
