Conventional Epithelial-Off Corneal Crosslinking in Patients With Progressive Keratoconus: 10-Year Outcomes.

Keratoconus (KC) is a degenerative, corneal, ectatic disorder that is frequently bilateral and asymmetric. KC is characterized by progressive corneal thinning, resulting in corneal protrusion, progressive irregular astigmatism, and a decrease in visual acuity. KC initially manifests during puberty and can progress in young adults to advanced forms associated with a severe loss in visual acuity.1 KC thus considerably affects patient quality of life2 and increases the probability of requiring keratoplasty.3 The global prevalence of KC has been estimated at between 0.2 and 4790 per 100,000 persons, varying according to geographic location, ethnicity, and interstudy differences (patient age, study design, definitions and diagnostic criteria for KC). The highest rates are, however, generally found among 20–30 year olds.4
