Association Between Keratoconus and Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Keratoconus is a progressive ectasia characterized by bilateral thinning and cone-like steepening of the cornea, primarily affecting individuals in adolescence and early adulthood.1 The end result of these corneal changes is irregular astigmatism and reduced vision. Patients with keratoconus have a worse quality of life than those with retinal conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular oedema, and retinal vein occlusion despite having relatively better visual acuity than in those conditions.2–4 The prevalence of keratoconus varies by sex and geography at ∼1.38 per 1000 individuals.5
